Wet Oval/ in the studio

 Oval Lava Bowl
wet clay in the studio...
it is this juxtaposition that I'm liking...
the raw and uncooked with
the slickly carved inside...
maybe cause the viewer to wonder...
there must be a reason why he makes them like this???
isn't there?

Moving Forward

I couldn't make any more bowls...
I've had enough of them for a while...
they support me, but.........
so it's off to some pots finally, the warm up is over...
at present I'm reaching for a means to prove these Lava pieces
actually embody a fine degree of craftsmanship...
something most people, especially jurors, seem not to appreciate...

took me just about 30 some years to figure out how to make them,
but who's counting.... I am I guess...
so this should help... juxtapose some fancy carving inside a rocky and crusty bowl...
being a craftsman is easy after some time, finding magic and energy is a whole different matter...
that's what interests me now... as a jazz player once said:
" learn your instrument, then forget all that shit and play"...
sounds good to me...

The Blues

Some additional experiments...
for some shocking perhaps, but I'm just having fun,
contradicting my ideas to further inform them...
little more green than the image shows, but that's the nature of turquoise...

This piece has been the most difficult to photograph that I have had...
never seem to be able to get an image which shows what I see when looking at it...
the details help some, but it's heart remains elusive through the camera...
I can easily make a smooth surface piece jump off the page,
but these convoluted textural surfaces remain difficult to capture...

Lupine season

It's Lupine season here in Maine
the roadsides and fields are filled with these beautiful plants
it's well worth a trip just to see them...

Another Old School Experiment

Another of the Old School Experiments...
Bottle
14in.H x 9.5in.
POR
at times pieces come from the kiln and their value is uncertain...
this piece has been sitting on the shelf for over a year...
originally thought not very nice really, now I wonder what the &#@% I was thinking...
the difference between expectation and reality, projection and the truth...
those polarities seem always to be present in life,
 it's the managing of them
that separates the wheat from the chaff...
wood firing teaches many things on many levels...
